Teens with dyslexia, dyscalculia, and dysgraphia are frequently brilliant lateral problem-solvers, compelling speakers, and gifted visual designers. But in a traditional school measuring everything through timed written tests and spelling, their ability remains masked.
Dyslexia is a phonological processing difference, not a measure of intelligence. When schools force all students through the exact same reading-heavy, handwritten pipeline, these teens work twice as hard for half the credit. By secondary school, many feel exhausted, anxious, and falsely convinced they aren’t smart.
For gifted and 2e teens with high sensory sensitivity, social anxiety, or an autism profile, large mainstream schools can feel like a sensory battlefield. Crowded hallways, blaring bell schedules, and unstructured chaos burn out mental energy before learning even begins.
